Recently, the Mortal Kombat trailer dropped, and it melted quite a few minds in the process. But this is the age of the internet, and nothing is going to be revealed to universal acclaim; not even a Fatality soaked clip reel that looks pretty spectacular. In fact, one of the first sticking points for Simon McQuoid’s directorial debut is the fact that Mileena, played by Sisi Stringer, doesn’t look her normal toothsome self. So producer Todd Garner took a moment to respond to concerns over Mileena’s appearance, and his words are pretty assuring.

The scrum of fans reacting to the Mortal Kombat trailer isn’t only those hoping that original techno banger theme song from the ‘90s would be present in some way. The question of why Mileena’s teeth didn’t look like they normally do, as well as why they didn’t extend as far along her face as we’re used to, were brought into the limelight. And as you’d expect, Todd Garner’s response on Twitter was short, sweet, and teasing as hell:

That’s not all of her

— Todd Garner (@Todd_Garner) February 18, 2021

It’s not crazy for fans to start noticing details such as Mileena’s Mortal Kombat teeth being absent, especially when the character is so well known. One of the big new character to 1993’s Mortal Kombat II, the inspiration for Sisi Stringer’s character was originally depicted with a mysterious mask. But as anyone who performed her classic Fatality would tell you, there was something hiding under that cloth, and it was a rather deadly surprise.

Now one could assume that either Mileena is going to go through some sort of transformation in Mortal Kombat to give her those teeth, or she’s hiding them for the time being. Either way, the new Warner Bros/New Line Cinema movie is definitely going more modern, by doing away with that facemask altogether. Take a look at how Mileena looks in the Mortal Kombat 11 game, as she’s pictured below, ready to tear apart Peter Weller’s Robocop. (DLC characters, man.)

Admittedly, this latest sneak peek at Mileena’s vicious look is a lot closer to the reality of her character than the Mortal Kombat teaser poster had indicated. From that image, you’d expect her to just have Joker style scars reminiscent to Heath Ledger’s The Dark Knight look. But while the trailer has given us a closer look at what to expect in the finished product, it appears that Todd Garner believes fans should prepare themselves for some tricks up their favorite fighter’s cheekbones. So take another look at the Mortal Kombat trailer, and try to see if you can spot any further indicators of that surprise for yourself.

Mortal Kombat is preparing to make things deadly again on April 16th, and unless you’re headed to a theater, you’re going to want an HBO Max account to view it. So be sure to sign up for a subscription, as you’re not going to want to miss any of the bloody excitement. I mean, it does look like a movie fans can sink their teeth into.

Marvel’s Dave Bautstia Is Looking Swole In Image From Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead

datetime=”2021-02-18T17:15:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 5:15 PM

Dave Bautista is one of those entertainers that is always working on an exciting new project. The WWE superstar turned actor has become a Hollywood staple over the last few of years, appearing in massive hits such as Blade Runner 2049, Spectre and multiple films across the MCU as Drax the Destroyer. His upcoming project Army of the Dead is in collaboration with Zack Snyder of Justice League fame, and will appear on the streaming giant Netflix. In a recently released image it looks like the former wrestler is still familiar with the gym after all these years, as he’s looking pretty swole.

The latest image released for Zack Snyder’s upcoming zombie flick Army of the Dead shows off Dave Bautista and his guns. Check it out below.

Dave Bautista talks to Empire about the killer premise of Zack Snyder's upcoming Netflix zombie genre-twister #ArmyOfTheDead – read the story and see an exclusive new image here: https://t.co/e1wIotRXPO pic.twitter.com/Bm3oovXNyE

— Empire Magazine (@empiremagazine) February 15, 2021

In the images first released by Empire Magazine, fans can see that Dave Bautistia spent his fair share of time in the gym ahead of shooting. He’s gotten quite jacked for the role of Scott Ward, a mercenary looking to make a big score in an undead-infested Las Vegas. Empire also shared an additional image that features Bautista working alongside Matthias Schweighöfer, who plays the safecracker of the group.

Dave Bautistia turned down the opportunity to work on James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad to be a part the zombie flick. The actor has kept a busy schedule as of late, as he will be appearing in the highly anticipated Dune reboot from Denis Villenueve. He’s also attached to reprise his role as Drax the Destroyer in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

Army of the Dead will follow a group of elite mercenaries as they try to pull off a heist in Las Vegas. The catch? The entire city is crawling with hordes of the undead. The film will be Zack Snyder Netflix debut, as the entire project fell into his lap during an impromptu meeting with some executives of the streaming service.

Snyder directed the film in addition to co-writing, and has been mulling over the horror meets heist flick since 2007. The director has even dropped easter eggs for his upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League in the trailer for Army of the Dead, further hyping up the release for the directors cut headed to HBO Max.

Army of the Dead isn’t the first time Zack Snyder has worked in the horror genre, as he made his directorial debut with 2004’s Dawn of the Dead. While Ving Rhames won’t be returning for the directors latest zombie movie, the current cast is stacked, even considering the last minute replacements.

Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead is currently in post production and is scheduled to release on Netflix some time later this year. While there is no confirmed release date, fans can keep an eye on CinemaBlend’s 2021 Release Schedule for the latest on the biggest films heading to the big (and small) screens near you.

The Internet Is Debating Hawkeye Vs Legolas, And The Responses Are A+

datetime=”2021-02-18T16:45:08-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 4:45 PM

There some fan battles that will never be over. Is Star Wars better than Star Trek? Is DC superior to Marvel? Should you own an Xbox or a PlayStation? While there’s no reason these days that fans can’t embrace literally all the options, these sorts of debates are still very common, and often fun. For some they’re simply entertaining exercises; fun ways to get fans talking amongst themselves. For others, they become serious discussions where there is clearly a right and a wrong answer. The newest debate in the social media town square that is Twitter is over the best archer in entertainment.

A post has gone viral asking fans who they think is the best on-screen with a bow and arrow. The candidates are Legolas from Lord of the Rings, Oliver Queen from the TV series Arrow, Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, and the Marvel Cinematic Universes’ Hawkeye. While there are four candidates, most people seem to be instantly narrowing their focus on Legolas and Hawkeye. Or, as many people seem to feel, “the obvious winner” and “this guy?”

legolas did not slide down a flight of stairs on an orc shield whilst shooting arrows and taking out 3 orcs to be compared to hawkeye https://t.co/lEtFr8gJ7o

— happy elf eryniel (@Eyrniel) February 18, 2021

Most responding to the original Twitter post seem to be very firmly on Team Legolas. In fact, a poll added the original post is running nearly 70% in favor of the character played by Orlando Bloom in the Lord of the Rings films and (for some reason) The Hobbit films. Hawkeye is actually running in second place with 15% of the vote, ahead of Oliver Queen, which makes the degree of hate the man is getting seem maybe a little unfair.

Then again, it’s probably not really a question, is it? Even giving Hawkeye all the credit he deserves, it’s hard to overcome Legolas. And it’s not even like it’s that fair a comparison. Yes, all these characters use a bow and arrow, but that doesn’t mean they’re equal. As Zelda Williams points out, there’s a reason Legolas is better than everybody else, but especially better than Hawkeye.

Legolas is thousands of years old, all of them spent perfecting his archery. I mean, he can shoot arrows from a classic long bow sans arrow rest (he uses his hand like a champ) with deadly precision while riding a shield down a flight of stone stairs.

Hawkeye has a laser sight. https://t.co/atX7Hv8faW

— Zelda Williams (@zeldawilliams) February 18, 2021

Which is not to say that the Hawkeye fans are not here for their boy. While the Legolas crew might be larger and louder, there are reasons not to completely overlook Hawkeye. The guy whose superpower is being really good with a bow and arrow is used to being overlooked as a member of the Avengers, but maybe everybody should take a step back and give the guy credit for what he can do.

My man Hawkeye was putting arrows between Alien eyeballs moving 80 mph+ through the streets of Manhattan from the top of a skyscraper… this is not a real question https://t.co/sBJXHjvCei

— Ol’ Yukon Cornelius (@Bad_Luck_BigRed) February 18, 2021

While these four are some of the best known modern archers in film and television, there are others. And many are using this platform to try and get some respect for their personal favorites.

Kimberly Hart did not successfully one-shot-k/ll at least three monsters with her Power Bow to be excluded from this list https://t.co/8blGKLE8lV pic.twitter.com/N9iKUqd6B9

So who is the best movie or TV archer? Let’s settle this once and for all with math. Let us know in the poll below.

Who Really Is The Best Archer?

  • Legolas

  • Hawkeye

One Of The Best Modern Zombie Movies Is Getting A Remake

datetime=”2021-02-18T16:19:02-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 4:19 PM

In the last year, Korean cinema has received a nice boost thanks to the incredible success of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite at the 2020 Academy Awards, and as a result a lot of people have had the good fortune of discovering Yeon Sang-ho’s Train To Busan: a 2016 zombie film that is unquestionably one of the best examples of the horror subgenre in the modern era. It’s a movie that’s actually really easy to find, as it’s currently streaming on multiple platforms, but Hollywood is preparing to double down on its popularity with an upcoming remake – and now said remake has found a director to take the helm.

News of this development comes to us from Deadline, which says that New Line is currently in negotiations with Timo Tjahjanto as the director of the new Train To Busan. The filmmaker is a veteran in the horror genre, having previously made segments for the anthology movies V/H/S/2 and The ABCs Of Death as well as the features May The Devil Take You and May The Devil Take You Too. He’s also well-versed in the action realm, having made the 2016 movie Headshot and the Netflix original The Night Comes For Us in 2018. All of that history should serve him well in the making of the zombie remake.

The original Train To Busan tells the story of a workaholic father (Gong Yoo) who starts the story by taking his young daughter on a train ride to the Korean city of Busan so that she can celebrate her birthday with her mother. Unfortunately, this trip happens to coincide with the timing of a leak at a chemical factory that is creating fast, infectious zombies. An infected person comes onboard before turning into a mindless monster, and the passengers have to work together to survive and move through the cars so that they don’t get transformed themselves.

The film is an intense, insane ride, and turned out to be a global hit. It didn’t do much business in theaters in North America, domestically earning just north of $2 million, but tickets sold around the world added another $90 million to that total. A direct sequel to Train To Busan, titled Train To Busan: Peninsula, was released last year, but it didn’t do anywhere near the same kind of business, making $42.7 million worldwide (obviously the pandemic was a big factor as well).

Gary Dauberman, who is best known for Annabelle Comes Home, IT, and IT Chapter Two, is writing the screenplay, and James Wan is on board as a producer through his Atomic Monster banner. Clearly there is still a lot of work to be done before the Train To Busan remake is ready to get up on its feet, but landing a director is obviously a big step forward.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Old: 8 Things We Know About The Horror Movie

datetime=”2021-02-18T16:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 4:00 PM

You know what they say? Everything old is new again. But in this case, the opposite might also be true. Everything new will soon be old. Certainly, M. Night Shyamalan is famous for taking familiar supernatural and/or existential concepts and spinning them into something uniquely unsettling. Not all of his movies are successful at towing that line, but Old, his latest film, sounds promising. A high-concept psychological fright tale written, produced, and directed by the filmmaker, this new project is a notably scaled-back effort, with a smaller crew, one primary location, and only a few actors involved. One hopes that those restrictions allow his talents to flourish, but time will soon tell.

As it was revealed during the Super Bowl, Old is scheduled to arrive in July. While details are limited, we do know some key bits of information about this new/old horror film, which we’ll share now. Here’s what we know about M. Night Shyamalan’s Old!

Old Is The Latest Psychological Horror Film Written, Directed, And Produced By M. Night Shyamalan

Folks, M. Night Shyamalan is back! The Sixth Sense filmmaker has earned as many fans as he has received detractors. But make no mistake: whenever Shyamalan makes a movie, it’s an event. Glass didn’t match the promise of Split, which was a refreshing return-to-form for the heavily criticized movie-maker, but this psychological horror movie sounds like it has the potential to be another comeback for the inconsistent director. We’ll discuss the intriguing plot of this new Shyamalan movie in just a bit.

The New Movie Is Inspired By The Graphic Novel Sandcastle By Pierre Oscar Levy And Frederik Peeters

It’s not often that M. Night Shyamalan makes an adaptation. For all his faults, he’s one of the few prominent filmmakers making original concept movies at a regular clip. That said, when it comes to this film, Shyamalan gained inspiration from an outside source.

Specifically, the writer/director took notes from Sandcastle, the graphic novel from Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. The storyteller was intrigued by what the material had to say about aging in its creative and haunting fashion, and the middle-aged director wanted to tell a similar story. One hopes this keen inspiration gives him the motivation he needs to tell a concise, engaging and intensely chilling cinematic tale.

Old Follows A Family On A Tropical Vacation Who Discover That Their Secluded Beach Causes Them To Age Rapidly In The Span Of A Day

Prior to this month’s Super Bowl trailer debut, Old was completely shrouded in secrecy, with hardly a clue publicly available — outside of its ambiguous title. Now that we have our first look at the upcoming horror film, however, Universal Studios finally released a synopsis, giving us an idea of what we can expect from M. Night Shyamalan’s new film.

As the company notes, Old will follow a family on a tropical vacation who discover what appears to be the perfect getaway spot. Alas, as the holiday progresses, the family discovers that the secluded beach is somehow causing them to age rapidly, reducing their entire lives into one single day. There’s definitely some heavy existential thematic ground to explore there, and it’ll be intriguing to see how M. Night Shyamalan tackles it.

The Movie Stars Gael Garcia Bernal And Phantom Thread’s Vicky Krieps

No matter how checkered his reputation may be, M. Night Shyamalan attracts some major talent. Old is hardly an exception, as it stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Vicky Krieps.

In both film and TV, Gael Garcia Bernal is known for a variety of roles, including Amores Perros, Y Tu Mama Tambien, The Motorcycle Diaries, Coco, Bad Education (2004), Babel, and Amazon Prime’s Mozart in the Jungle, the latter for which he won a Golden Globe. Additionally, Vicky Krieps is primarily recognized for her starring role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, though she was also seen in Hanna (2011), A Most Wanted Man, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Colonia, and Sky One’s Das Boot.

The Supporting Cast Includes Rufus Sewell, Abbey Lee, Alex Wolff, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, And Ken Leung

In addition to starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Vicky Krieps, Old’s supporting cast is also filled with standouts, including Tony nominee Rufus Sewell (A Knight’s Tale), Abbey Lee (The Neon Demon), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), Eliza Scanlen (2019’s Little Women), Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit) and Ken Leung (Star Wars: The Force Awakens).

Additionally, Old will also feature the talents of Nikki Amuka-Bird (The Personal History of David Copperfield), Alexa Swinton (Billions), Embeth Davitz (The Amazing Spider-Man), and Kathleen Chalfant (House of Cards). Even though Old appears to be modest in scale for M. Night Shyamalan, he has surrounded himself with a theatrical ensemble. Hopefully, everyone will get their time to shine in this summery vacation horror-drama.

Old Was Filmed In The Dominican Republic, Reportedly Making It The First M. Night Shyamalan Movie Shot Completely Out Of Philadelphia Since His Directorial Debut

Typically, you can expect several things from an M. Night Shyamalan movie. You can expect it to be built around an atmospheric premise that doesn’t fully reveal itself until the end. You can expect a twist ending that blows your mind or leaves you ripping your tickets in disgust. You can expect spooky scenes mixed with clunky dialogue. And you can expect it to feature Philadelphia as a backdrop. But now, the latter is set to change.

For the first time since 1992’s Praying with Anger, M. Night Shyamalan’s little-seen feature directorial debut, Shyamalan reportedly filmed his newest film away from the comforts of Philly, as Old was shot entirely in the Dominican Republic last fall. Certainly, Shyamalan is branching out more, which might give some new life to his familiar vision.

While many of M. Night Shyamalan’s movies aren’t based in The City of Brotherly Love, including After Earth and The Last Airbender, the writer-director has shot his previous movies on sound stages in and near the city. Alas, Old was filmed completely away from Philadelphia, making it a noted departure from his previous work in that respect.

It’s The First Movie M. Night Shyamalan Shot On 35mm Since The Last Airbender

Fittingly enough, Old will be an old-fashioned effort from M. Night Shyamalan. It’s a scaled-back project, relying on one primary setting, only a minimal number of characters, and a high-concept premise that will almost certainly have some sort of twist by the end. In addition to all these elements, Old is also reportedly the first Shyamalan movie in a decade to be shot on 35mm film. Not since 2010’s The Last Airbender has the writer/director shot on actual film; all his follow-up projects (The Visit, Split, Glass) relied on digital photography. Considering all the ways the movie is scaled down, maybe the filmmaker had more room in his budget for film stock? In any case, this decision gives it a crisper cinematic look that’ll look great on the big screen.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Old is the fourth collaboration between M. Night Shyamalan and cinematographer Mike Gioulakis. The filmmaker and Us director of photography previously worked together on Split, Glass, and Apple TV+’s Servant.

Old Is Scheduled To Come Out On July 23rd

These days, it’s hard to know for certain when any movie will come out. We could all be old ourselves by the time M. Night Shyamalan’s latest makes its way into theaters. Nevertheless, following a delayed February 26th release date, the film is now set to be released on July 23rd, in whatever the summer movie season will look like this year. Of course, that’s subject to change, but Universal Studios is holding steadfast for now. Certainly, as we mentioned before, time will tell regarding Old’s forthcoming release.

Are you excited to see M. Night Shyamalan’s Old? Let us know in the comments below!

Chris Evans Getting Excited For The Mars Landing Has Me Hyped For Disney’s Buzz Lightyear Movie

datetime=”2021-02-18T15:45:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 3:45 PM

This afternoon, NASA’s 2,200 pound Perseverance rover completed its mission to Mars after launching from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on July 30, 2020. Following its 300-million-mile journey through space, the rover will explore signs of past or present life on Mars’ Jezero Crater, a region of the planet that is believed to once contain rivers. It’s a momentous moment for NASA and the star of Pixar’s upcoming Lightyear movie, Chris Evans, is following along closely.

Soon after NASA’s Perseverance Mars Rover Twitter account announced it was safe and sound on the Red Planet, Chris Evans couldn’t help but gush about the occasion. It looks like the actor is already fitting into those Buzz Lightyear boots:

I love this. https://t.co/yMYlyBp8ht

— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) February 18, 2021

Chris Evans is totally into space travel, because of course! The actor retweeted a number of videos from NASA as well documenting Perseverance’s landing on Thursday. It’s a solid reminder of how much we can’t wait to see the actor take on Pixar’s famed space ranger in Lightyear, set to come out in 2022.

The animated project was announced back in December during Walt Disney Studios massive investor presentation. There are few details known about the movie itself, but Lightyear is expected to explore an actual astronaut named Buzz Lightyear rather than the action toy that Tim Allen played for the Toy Story movies. It sounds like it will be somewhat of a prequel for the character as it follows a young test pilot on his journey to become a space ranger.

It’s an exciting role for Chris Evans, who is already a Disney fan, especially following his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America’s heartfelt conclusion (for now, at least). His Marvel brothers Tom Holland and Chris Pratt similarly went the Pixar route with Onward, an imaginative fantasy flick that hit theaters last year. Pixar is clearly smitten with Marvel talent and nabbing them for voice roles.

Lightyear will undoubtedly give us a better feel for what Buzz Lightyear means when he says “to infinity and beyond,” and that means Chris Evans’ character will be venturing to the far reaches of space. Considering the long process it takes to make a Pixar movie, Evans could already be in the recording booth running lines for Buzz in between checking on the Perseverance. Lightyear is already just a little over a year away!

Evans said he was concerned about stepping on Tim Allen’s role when he was approached about the movie initially, but when he heard the pitch, he said he “didn’t stop smiling,” and he’s assured fans to get very excited about his animated project. Aside from Lightyear, Evans is filming Don’t Look Up with Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, and is expected to play a villain with Ryan Gosling in The Gray Man.

Lightyear is expected to hit theaters on June 17, 2022. We’ll be curious to see how this movie shakes out and if it will inspire more reimaginings of Pixar characters.

Rosamund Pike Thinks Her Gone Girl Character Could Match Wits With Her Ruthless I Care A Lot Character

datetime=”2021-02-18T15:15:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 3:15 PM

No one is going to typecast Rosamund Pike. The Oscar-nominated actress is far too talented to be pidgeonholed, though there is no denying that she has a unique talent for playing brainy, icy characters who seem to be two steps ahead of whomever her competition might be. This dates all the way back to her days in the James Bond franchise (she played Miranda Frost in the 2002 installment Die Another Day opposite Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry), and continues to her latest Netflix thriller, I Care A Lot.

Because of her pattern, I asked Pike which of her previous characters could best match wits with his current I Care A Lot character, Marla, and Pike went right to where I figured she would: Gone Girl’s Amy Dunne. Watch the clip above.

Writing about I Care A Lot can be a real challenge, particularly because J. Blakeson’s pitch-black story contains a wealth of unpredictable twists and turns, and it’s best that you go into it as blind as possible. Here’s what I can tell you about Rosamund Pike’s character, Marla Grayson. She’s extremely good at her job, which involves taking over the legal rights to elderly folks who are deemed unable to care for themselves, either physically or mentally. She helps them from their homes, and into the convenience of an elderly care facility, usually at the behest of the courts, because these seniors don’t have family of their own.

Except, what if these people don’t want to go? And what if they disagree with the court that they are unable to make up their own minds, and care for themselves on a daily basis? How do you get the upperhand on Marla, and her devious tactics?

When asked how Marla would face off against Amy Dunne, the similarly devious title role of David Fincher’s brilliant adaptation of Gone Girl, Rosamund Pike reflected:

It could be that Marla comes out on top, because Amy is a meticulous planner. Amy needs to have everything prepared in advance, down to the last tee. She has everything worked out, in the most incredible way. But Marla can respond and react on her feet. She’s more of the sort of street fighter. So, it depends on how much preparation Amy had had. [laughs] If Amy had full preparation, I think Amy would win. If she had LESS time to prepare, then Marla would win.

Now I just want to see these two incredible characters matching wits in a cat-and-mouse game, because the real winner there is the audience… and fans of Rosamund Pike.

I Care A Lot got raves out of the Toronto Film Festival when it premiered, and will now screen on Netflix. Beginning Friday, Feb. 19. Our own Eric Eisenberg gave it a perfect 5 stars, and he’s correct. Watch it. It will not let you down.

Jamie Dornan’s Wife Had A Very Funny Observation About His Barb And Star Performance

datetime=”2021-02-18T14:37:01-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 2:37 PM

The majority of people reading this story probably know Jamie Dornan as the handsome leading man from the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, where he played dominant sex addict Christian Grey. It’s easy to get typecast when you become a global sensation in a series such as that, and Dornan has been doing his part to take roles that are very different than Mr. Grey, leading to parts in the sci-fi thriller Synchronic, A Private War opposite Rosamund Pike, and the new comedy Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar.

In that new film from Kristen Wiig and Anniue Mumolo, Jamie Dornan plays … well, the henchman for an evil power broker named Susan Gorton Fisherman (played by a surprise guest) who has a vengeance play against the seaside Florida town of Vista Del Mar. And it’s really, really silly. But Dornan fits right in with the bizarre humor — something that didn’t surprise his wife one bit.

Barb and Star director Josh Greenbaum stopped by CinemaBlend’s official podcast, ReelBlend, to talk all things Barb and Star, and when we spoke about Jamie Dornan’s screamingly funny performance, Greenbaum shared this story:

I’ve long had this belief that really good comedic actors, really talented ones, almost always are great at drama, you know? You’ve seen it with guys like Steve Carell or Jim Carrey, because to be really funny, generally speaking, you’re playing the drama of the scene, but you just know how to make it a little bit funnier. And I think that’s a tough thing to do. As soon as Jamie stepped on set, I know Kristin, Annie and I were all like, ‘Oh, he’s got it. He gets it.’ … His wife at one point came up to me while we were on set, or having dinner at some point, and she said, ‘This is Jamie. What you guys are doing, all his friends know this part of Jamie.’ It just so happens that the first big role he got, he was a serial killer, and then it went from there! So I’m excited for the world to discover this side of him, because he is such a talent.

We have seen other examples of non-comedians plugging into roles in wacky comedies and fitting right in. It tends to suggest that they have strong senses of humor in their own lives, but translating that to the screen isn’t always easy. Jamie Dornan is ridiculously funny in Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. His song, “Edgar’s Prayer,” is the moment during my screening when I lost my breath from laughing so hard.

Can this lead to a slew of new comedic roles for Jamie Dornan? It’s possible, though I wonder if he needs to be in the right hands to make it work. He easily holds his own opposite Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo in Barb and Star. With the right collaborators, this definitely could be the start of a successful new avenue for him.

Powered by RedCircle

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar is available to stream as we speak, and you absolutely should. It’s one of the funniest movies we have seen in a long time, thanks in large part to Jamie Dornan’s wild turn.

Pixar Turned Up Into An Anime And It’s Incredible

Pixar is no stranger to making fans cry, but no movie has been quite as successful at that as Up. While most Pixar films get you to spend time and invest in the characters before breaking your heart, Up did that at the beginning of the movie with an incredibly emotional montage. This… is not that version of Up.

Feast your eyes and ears on Up Remix from Pixar. It’s basically a 90-second long retelling of the story of up, but it’s done in a more traditional 2D animation. And it looks and sounds more like a Japanese anime than anything we’d normally see in the west. It may sound like a radical departure that could never work, but somehow, it does. It’s beautiful, exciting, and just plain fun. Check it out.

Here the heartbreaking relationship between Carl and Ellie is only a few seconds long, and the music is so upbeat and exciting that you forget how sad the whole thing really is. We move on quickly to the heart of the story, the house flying away, getting caught in a storm, and finding Paradise Falls. The best part is when Charles Muntz appears and the whole thing goes full on Dragon Ball, with Charles and Carl battling, each one surrounded by their own color coded flames, at least until their backs both go out.

This isn’t the first time Pixar has put together a remix of one of their popular films. The studio previously did a version of Wall-E done in the style of 16-bit video game graphics. This certainly makes one wonder what other remix ides Pixar might have up their sleeve. I doubt many of us would have ever guessed that an anime inspired Up was something that would work that well, but it really does. If nothing else, it’s cool to see the film reimagined as something else.

I’ll admit, this makes me want to check out Up again. While we all remember that opening sequence, it’s easy to forget that the entire movie is still really good. Sure, it’s not quite as action packed as this short might imply, but there really is a sword fighting sequence where Carl uses his cane to defend against a blade, and it really does end hilariously with both old men tweaking their backs.

Hopefully there are other Pixar remixes on the way. There are so many great Pixar movies and so many more animation styles to choose from that the permutations are numerous. Maybe we could get Finding Nemo as a black and white short from the 1920s. Brave in stop-motion animation. A rotoscoped Ratatouille. There’s a lot of options that could make for some fun new creations.

And of course, the fact this turned out so well also makes one wonder if we could see Pixar create more like this. I’m sure if somebody at Pixar wanted to make an anime-style series, somebody at Disney+ would be interested in released it.

Tom Holland Throws His Hat Into The James Bond Ring And At This Point Why Not?

datetime=”2021-02-18T05:17:37-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 5:17 AM

Casting a new James Bond is a nearly insurmountable task. There’s a lot of speculation and jockeying the position with various candidates, but ultimately someone is chosen. We’ll likely be waiting for that experience until, at the very least, some time has passed after No Time To Die’s release. But there’s yet another candidate throwing their hat into the ring to succeed Daniel Craig: current Spider-Man star Tom Holland.

Always the busy man, Tom Holland spoke with Variety’s Awards Chatter podcast, as his latest film Cherry is making the rounds before its streaming premiere this month. And though he may be occupied playing Spider-Man in the MCU and starring in potential franchise starters like Uncharted, Holland clearly has room for a tuxedo in his closet. So the following statement is no surprise:

I’ve got two roles coming up that I’m playing in the next few years that I’m really excited about, but I can’t talk about them yet. But I mean, ultimately, as a young British lad who loves cinema, I’d love to be James Bond. So, you know, I’m just putting that out there. I look pretty good in a suit.

Mysterious as always, Tom Holland is keeping himself going with those two roles that he “can’t talk about,” as well as gigs like starring in the long-awaited adaptations of both Sony’s Uncharted franchise and Lionsgate’s YA hopeful Chaos Walking. But if there was ever a potential stumbling block for Holland’s potential 007 casting, it’d have to be the fact that he’s currently committed to that friendly, neighborhood franchise known as Spider-Man. A role that has advantages as well as drawbacks to his hypothetical Bond-ing.

On the brighter side of the issue, doing so many appearances in the MCU would make Tom Holland ready for the demanding stunt work a movie like No Time To Die, or any other modern Bond movie, would require. Plus, Holland’s natural British charm checks some boxes for those who don’t believe that anyone but someone from the UK and its former colonies could continue the 007 legacy. But before you get too excited, there needs to be some discussion about the negative side of making such a casting decision.

While Tom Holland is an actor that’s certainly capable of range, we’re only just starting to see him branch out with the rather extreme looking Cherry. As we’ve seen in the past, Eon Productions typically casts someone who’s in that sweet spot between somewhat of an established name, but not too big of a brand, to play James Bond. Though sometimes exceptions can be made, like if DC Studios fixture Henry Cavill were to be cast in the role. At this moment, Tom Holland is automatically known as Spider-Man, and that’s a hard look to shake when trying out for another iconic legacy that tends to follow an actor around in their post-gig years.

As of this writing, Tom Holland is an actor who looks like he’s hitting his stride. Should the diversification of his career work out, the 24 year-old actor could be a perfect candidate for the James Bond series a couple of years down the road. Let’s not forget that even Daniel Craig had some critics in his initial casting, and 2006’s Casino Royale shut that down right quick. With that in mind, let’s watch Mr. Holland’s career with great interest, and revisit this matter when the time is right; because when it comes to playing James Bond, it’s best to never say never.

How do you feel about Tom Holland as a potential James Bond?

  • 100% behind it.

  • I could dig it, after he gets some more experience outside the MCU.

  • I don’t think I could ever see him as anything but Spider-Man.

Nightmare Alley: 6 Quick Things We Know About The Bradley Cooper Movie

datetime=”2021-02-18T05:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 18. 2021 5:00 AM

Having conquered the world of big screen comedy, biographical dramas, comic book movies, and even starred in a few horror flicks, the next venture for Bradley Cooper is film noir, with none other than Guillermo del Toro as his guide. The celebrated visionary filmmaker cast the Academy Award-nominated A Star is Born actor as the lead of his next big project, Nightmare Alley, in 2019.

The mystery thriller, set in the 1940s, tells the story of a man named Stanton “Stan” Carlisle – Bradley Cooper’s character – who makes a living at a traveling carnival with his manipulative skills in mentalism. His ambition for greater glory eventually leads him to cross paths with Lilith Ritter (Oscar winner Cate Blanchett), a psychiatrist for the upper class with her own penchant for deceit.

The upcoming film will be many audiences’ introduction to this classic story of suspense, but it will not be the first time it has been told on the big screen. That being said, what is the legacy of Nightmare Alley and what else is there to know about it before it finally hits theaters? The answers will be revealed in the following collection of confirmed facts surrounding this anticipated production, starting with when we can expect to see it.

Nightmare Alley Is Set For A December 3, 2021, Release

Principal photography on Nightmare Alley first began in January 2020, but just two months later, it would join the club of countless Hollywood projects put on pause in the wake of Covid-19’s global outbreak. Disney, which owns the film’s distribution company Searchlight Pictures, would continue to keep the production on hold until the following September.

After it had initially finishing shooting in November 2020, followed by reshoots, Nightmare Alley officially wrapped on production on December 12, 2020. By then, it was scheduled to hit theaters nearly a year later – specifically on Friday, December 3, 2021.

Bradley Cooper Is Joined By A Star-Studded Cast For Nightmare Alley

Before Bradley Cooper got the part of deceptive carny Stan Carlisle, Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to lead the cast of Nightmare Alley in early 2019 before scheduling conflicts forced him to abandon the project. Cooper’s stepping in was confirmed the following September, along with Cate Blanchett as Lilith Ritter, and her Carol co-star Rooney Mara as Molly Cahill.

That same month, in another instance of casting replacements for the project, David Strathairn took over Michael Shannon’s original role of Pete Krumbein, while Toni Collette was announced as his carnival performer wife, Zeena, followed by Willem Dafoe’s inclusion that October and Mindhunter’s Holt McCallany the next month. Peaky Blinders star Paul Anderson, veteran Italian actress and singer Romina Power, and Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen all joined the cast of Nightmare Alley during the first few months of shooting, following the January 2020 additions of The Shape of Water’s Richard Jenkins and Ron Perlman, who has an extensive history with the director.

Guillermo Del Toro Makes A Long Awaited Directorial Return With Nightmare Alley

It was announced that Guillermo del Toro would be directing Nightmare Alley while he was still riding high on the widespread acclaim for The Shape of Water in December 2017. The romantic fantasy, which earned the 56-year-old, Mexican-born filmmaker Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, was actually the last movie for which he was at the helm.

Of course, the man has still been keeping busy since, directing episodes of his trilogy of animated Tales of Arcadia series on Netflix or producing films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the 2018 sequel to Pacific Rim, or the completed but not-yet released horror film Antlers, for instance. He will follow-up Nightmare Alley as co-director of a dark, stop-motion take on Pinocchio (which has been in and out of development hell since 2008) and a documentary profiling the career of Michael Mann that is currently untitled.

Guillermo Del Toro Co-Wrote The Screenplay With Movie Critic Kim Morgan

While he is not sharing the director’s chair this time, for Guillermo del Toro, penning the script for Nightmare Alley was not a solo effort. The famously collaborative talent had a co-screenwriter in the form of Kim Morgan, who is better known for her journalism background.

The film aficionado and critic has written for many notable entertainment-based publications, such as Sight & Sound and Playboy, and has also contributed to The Criterion Collection, presented films airing on Turner Classic Movies, and sat in for Roger Ebert as a guest on Ebert & Roeper in 2007. Nightmare Alley is Kim Morgan’s third screenwriting effort, but neither she nor Guillermo del Toro are the first to tell the story.

Nightmare Alley Is The Second Film Adaptation Of A Novel

The inspiration for Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is a book of the same, published in 1946. The bleak commentary on the seedy inhabitants of show business – complete with slimy schemers, femme fatales, and all the classic elements of noir – is the debut novel and best known work of American writer William Lindsay Gresham.

Just a year after its release, Nightmare Alley was adapted into a film by Twentieth Century Fox starring Tyrone Power (whose daughter, Romina, appears in the upcoming reinterpretation) in the role now held by Bradley Cooper. Guillermo del Toro has described his new version as not a remake of the 1947 picture, but a “re-adaptation,” which may likely be from his reputation for darkness.

Nightmare Alley Will Be Rated R, According to Guillermo Del Toro

If there was any question of just how dark Nightmare Alley could be, Guillermo del Toro has already made sure to set that record straight. While speaking to Collider in promotion of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, he mentioned how he had been a fan of the William Lindsay Gresham’s novel since the early ’90s. When asked if the film would be rated R, he assured that “double-R” would be a more fitting rating for the noir when he was a done.

While there likely should not have been any question of an R-rating for a traditional film noir from Guillermo del Toro, his promise does come with much reassurance, nonetheless. With the exception of Hellboy, I have always preferred his darker, more adult stories, such as Pan’s Labyrinth or The Devil’s Backbone, believing them to match up with his vision more smoothly than his lighter efforts. That being said, with its mega-talented cast and heavy source material, it appears that we may be in for yet another Del Toro masterpiece with Nightmare Alley.

Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals Her Own COVID Struggle And Long Term Side Effects

datetime=”2021-02-17T18:40:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 17. 2021 6:40 PM

In the past year, 110 million people worldwide have reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 with close to 2.5 million deaths resulting from the virus. It has proven not to have any boundaries, as the pandemic has reached some of Hollywood’s biggest names and their families since the early months of last year. Marvel’s Pepper Potts and Goop’s CEO Gwyneth Paltrow just opened up about her own dealings with the coronavirus.

Paltrow took to a blog post on Goop’s website to share how COVID-19 affected her body and offered some insight about how she’s dealing with the long term effects she’s been experiencing. In her words:

I had COVID-19 early on, and it left me with some long-tail fatigue and brain fog. In January, I had some tests done that showed really high levels of inflammation in my body. So I turned to one of the smartest experts I know in this space, the functional medicine practitioner Dr. Will Cole. After he saw all my labs, he explained that this was a case where the road to healing was going to be longer than usual.

According to the 48-year-old actress and businesswoman, she had COVID in the early months of the pandemic, and she’s still feeling some side effects from the virus long after having it. Paltrow still deals with “brain fog,” which affects one’s ability to think, remain organized, and focused.

At the start of 2021, she decided to get some lab work done that told her that she still is dealing with inflammation within her body. In turn, Gwyneth Paltrow has been placing a lot of focus on her health and lifestyle in between raising her two kids that she had with ex -husband, Chris Martin.

As she shared with her Goop audience, she decided to apply the techniques of a medicine practitioner named Dr. Will Cole, and his method of fasting, which includes her skipping meals until 11 a.m. and turning to mainly keto and plant-based foods. She said she is cooking, working out in the mornings, taking supplements “in service of a healthier gut,” and using an infrared sauna.

Knowing Gwyneth Paltrow and her famous lifestyle brand, the actress has a lot more resources to become knowledgeable about fighting back against the lingering side effects of COVID-19 and she is using her platform to share what she is doing and plug some of the products the brand has in stock for customers. It’s a advice from the holistic approach Goop stands by.

Paltrow’s post goes to show that COVID-19 hits everyone differently, and focusing on our own health is more important than ever. Tom Hanks, for example, is more than 15 years older than Paltrow, and he had mild symptoms. It’s great to hear that the actress is staying strong and doing all she can to remain healthy.

Coming To America Actress Reveals How She Feels Her Skin Color Affected Her Casting

In John Landis’ Coming To America, Vanessa Bell Calloway plays what is an incredibly memorable role. Playing Princess Imani Izzi, she is arranged to be married to Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem at the start of the film… but suffers the issue of not having a personality divorced from her devotion to her would-be husband. For a small part it is a great one – though the actor has now come out saying that she feels she would have had a much bigger part in the film if she had lighter skin.

Vanessa Bell Calloway is reprising her role as Princess Imani Izzi in the upcoming Coming 2 America, and it was while recently speaking with Page Six that she aired some grievances with the production of the original movie. According to Calloway, she originally auditioned for the female lead in the movie, Lisa McDowell, but she feels that she was passed over because of the tone of her skin. Said the actor,

When you have white people hiring black people in movies, sometimes a certain look is wanted. [They] wanted a light-skinned girl. I just wasn’t light enough, even though Eddie had the final say on who played Lisa.

The role of Lisa McDowell in Coming To America was ultimately given to Shari Headley, who also reprises her role in Coming 2 America – albeit this time she is the queen of Zamunda. Continuing, Vanessa Bell Calloway said that the casting was indicative of a larger systemic issue that has to deal with perception of race in the world, not just in Hollywood. She said,

That’s something that we’ve always dealt with within our race: A lot of men were indoctrinated by having a white woman or light-skinned woman on their arm. I didn’t want the part of Imani, I wanted to be Lisa — I had read the script and I wanted the bigger role.

Vanessa Bell Calloway may have had a small role in Coming To America, which was only her second feature film, but she has continued to work consistently ever since. Primarily performing on the small screen, she has had recurring and one-off roles on a wide variety of of shows in the last three decades. In the last 10 years she has had a regular role on the Showtime series Shameless, which came to an end in 2020.

As noted, her next film will be director Craig Brewer’s Coming 2 America, which features a huge number of returning stars from the original movie. In addition to Vanessa Bell Calloway, Eddie Murphy, and Shari Headley, the Amazon Prime film also stars Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Louie Anderson, and Clint Smith. Though it was originally supposed to come out at the end of 2020, it’s now set to start streaming for Amazon subscribers on March 5.

Universal Studios Parks: What’s New And Coming In 2021 And Beyond

datetime=”2021-02-17T18:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 17. 2021 6:00 PM

2020 was a year that took away many things that fans hold dear in their hearts, one of which was the ability to visit amusement parks. Big parks like Walt Disney World, Busch Gardens, and many others had shuttered their doors to protect the public from the spreading of the COVID-19 pandemic. And sadly, being able to relive our favorite films and TV shows were shut for a time as well, as Universal Studios Orlando, as well as the other parks, were closed.

However, the parks themselves have reopened and 2021 is looking like a bright year for Universal in terms of fans returning, and new stuff that they have coming to their properties. While Universal Studios Hollywood will continue to remain closed indefinitely with no opening date officially announced yet, the other parks have come out with multiple new pieces of news. From Orlando to Tokyo, here is what Universal Studios has coming in 2021, and beyond.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster Will Open In Summer 2021 At Universal Studios Orlando

It’s been some time since the classic Jurassic Park coaster closed down in the Jurassic Park area of Universal Studio s Orlando. Many fans had wondered what would be replacing the iconic ride, and now, the replacement is coming sooner than all of us expected.

Even with COVID throwing a wrench into many plans, the new VelociCoaster will be opening up as soon as summer 2021 in Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.

This is the first time since the opening of Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure that a new ride has opened up in Universal Orlando, and with the planned sequel to the Jurassic World movies coming out in 2022, there’s no better time to open up the new ride.

New Construction On CityWalk In Orlando

Alright, I love CityWalk. I really feel like it’s the adult version of Disney Springs because there are plenty of bars, restaurants, and a nice movie theater to go to as well (even if Disney Springs has a movie theater too, I like this one more).

It seems that Universal is taking steps to expand it even more, with new photos popping up of construction, showing off what seems to be a large retail space that is currently being built. It’s not known what this retail space might house but it’s clear that the construction is moving quickly.

It’s good to note that CityWalk already has quite a large retail space dedicated to Universal in place, so if this ends up being an upgrade to the previous store, one can only wonder what will occupy the old space. Or this might be a new restaurant to add onto CityWalk’s repertoire of amazing food. Only time will tell.

Universal Is Opening Up A New Park In Beijing In 2021

As Universal continues to expand its parks to other countries, it was inevitable that it would end up in one of the biggest in the world. Beginning in May, Universal Studios Beijing in China will officially open to the public, a park that has been planned for years.

This new park will feature plenty of rides that fans know of like Jurassic World, but also new ones that are from movies such as the Kung Fu Panda series, and How To Train Your Dragon. The initial phase of this new park will include Universal Studios, as well as their own version of Universal’s CityWalk for guests to enjoy prior to entering the park.

There are no word yet if there is going to be multiple parks like Universal Studios Orlando, but if this opening goes as planned, who knows what Universal might bring in the future to the new resort.

Super Nintendo World Has Opened In Japan

This was one of my big highlights when I first heard about this. As a big Nintendo fan and someone who basically spent her whole entire 2020 on her Nintendo Switch, I couldn’t wait to see what Super Nintendo World had to offer in Japan.

Fortunately for Japanese residents, the new park has already opened for fans, as it’s been in operation since February 4, 2021. However, U.S. residents will have to wait a little longer for a version of this to arrive in America, as COVID-19 delays are making it harder for construction to happen.

Fun fact – making this new themed area took around $578 million dollars, which was $120 million more than what Universal said it took to build the Diagon Alley portion of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. So there’s no denying that this new area had some serious work put into it.

C’est la vie. I suppose I’ll enjoy the videos of other people getting to enjoy it first from the safety of my home.

Universal’s Epic Universe Might Continue Construction In Orlando

Universal Studios Resort in Orlando announced way back in 2019 that they were going to be building a whole new theme park, one that was supposed allegedly to be their “most immersive and innovative yet” compared to their other parks there. The new park, under the name of Universal’s Epic Universe, was to be bigger than the other theme parks and located right down the road from both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

It was originally slated to open in 2023 with plenty of new rides and lands featuring all of our favorite movies, with construction continuing throughout the years. But now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, construction has halted on the new park. The launch date was pushed back to 2024, but things aren’t looking too good for the new park in general.

Recently, Twitter posts from Bioreconstruct have shown aerial shots of the construction site for the new park, and it looks pretty abandoned. There doesn’t seem to be any new construction on the ground, and everything seems to be a dirt path as of late.

There haven’t been any updates on Universal’s end as to when construction might continue or when an official opening date is set, but if there are other rides and theme areas opening in other parts of the world, it might not be that much of a hunch to think construction could start back up again. However, because nothing is confirmed yet, take everything with a grain of salt. All we can really do is wait. Who knows? Maybe by the time this park opens, we’ll actually have the Avatar sequel we’ve been waiting for.

With all these big changes happening across the world to Universal, hopefully, soon that will be carried over to the United States as well. What are you excited about Universal Studios this year?

13 Going On 30’s Jennifer Garner Is Making Another Body Swap Movie, This Time For Streaming

datetime=”2021-02-17T17:30:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 17. 2021 5:30 PM

More than 15 years after the movie’s original release, Jenna Rink from 13 Going on 30 is arguably Jennifer Garner’s most well-known role. The rom-com memorably has a child of the ‘80s suddenly finding herself in her body of her adult self, and it was fabulous. Watching the actress play a girl in a woman’s body was just funny and unforgettable. Now she is getting set to return to the body swap genre, as Garner has just signed up for a new movie centered on a family who get all mixed up.

Jennifer Garner will star in a Netflix original called Family Leave. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be about a family that wakes up to a “full family body switch” with another family who lives on the other side of the world. Once they realize the event has happened, they race to unite and undo the random event. Family Leave will be a comedy that will surely involve some hilarious situations pertaining to the families attempting to live their daily lives in different bodies than their own – a classic element of the setup.

Although it’s a wildly different concept than 13 Going on 30, we already can’t wait to see Jennifer Garner jump into another comedic role like this, filled with all varieties of awkward situations. In her 2004 movie with Mark Ruffalo, she really thrived in making those cringe-heavy moments a good time for the audience, and contributed greatly to making it a classic.

Family Leave is based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s children’s book called Bedtime For Mommy. In the 2010 book, there’s a role reversal in terms of a child getting her mom ready for bed instead. It sounds like Family Leave is building on the story greatly, but its origins could mean Jennifer Garner gets to play a child in a woman’s body again, but in a different context.

Before she officially starts work on Family Leave, Jennifer Garner’s Netflix debut will be coming next month with Yes Day, another family comedy that has a story by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. You can check out the trailer for Garner’s Netflix debut below:

Yes Day is about a couple of parents who decide to let their children make the rules for a full 24 hours, leading to a day of unexpected adventure and chaos for the parents. Jennifer Garner will play the mother alongside Edgar Ramírez’s father character . Garner is also set to star in a movie called The Adam Project also starring Ryan Reynolds and Zoe Saldana. The sci-fi film will be about Reynold’s character traveling back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self.

All in all, Garner is keeping busy with roles in between raising a family of her own and owning a farm in California. Family Leave sounds like Freaky Friday with a whole lot more body swap, and room for hilarity.

Ryan Phillippe Explains Why He Can’t Make The Movies He Used To Anymore

datetime=”2021-02-17T16:55:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 17. 2021 4:55 PM

In the last five years, Ryan Phillippe’s acting work has mostly been for the small screen. One could say his transition across mediums started in 2012 with his recurring role on FX’s Damages, but since 2015 he’s primarily been leading shows like Secrets And Lies, Shooter, and Big Sky. It’s been a deviation from the era of his career that saw him star in films like Cruel Intentions, Gosford Park, and Igby Goes Down, but he has a pretty solid explanation for why that is: those kinds of movies aren’t being made much anymore.

Currently promoting the aforementioned series Big Sky, which is currently airing its first season on ABC, Ryan Phillippe was recently interviewed by The Independent and during the conversation opened up about his current preference for television over film. Basically, the movies that he enjoys making are those that are bigger than microbudget titles and smaller than blockbusters, but the opportunities to make those kinds of projects aren’t exactly plentiful. Said Phillippe,

The types of movies I made early in my career are virtually gone. I tended to exist in that $25m to $45m budget range. The way the film industry has [shifted], there’s just not as many movies being made outside of the tent-poles or the big action movies and Marvel and all of that… (Television) seems to be where the most interesting and layered stories are these days. It was certainly not that way when I began my career.

To bolster Ryan Phillippe’s point, mid-budget movies obviously do still exist to some degree, but there are far fewer of them being produced within the studio system these days compared to 25 years ago – and that means that competition for roles in those projects is fierce. Given the ways that people take in entertainment these days, the major focus is on either big blockbusters that have the potential to earn a billion dollars worldwide, or films that can be made for under $10 million and potentially become breakout hits.

Television, particularly thanks to the rise of streaming services, has become a wholly different arena. The stories that were once made as those $25-$45 million movies are now being expanded and further explored as shows. It’s certainly a volatile world, as, for example, very few Netflix series make it past a few seasons, but there is an extreme hunger for content from audiences, and it creates a lot of opportunities for actors like Ryan Phillippe.

Of course, Phillippe hasn’t totally disappeared from features, and he currently has two upcoming titles that have completed production. One is the fantasy comedy Lady of The Manor, directed by Christian Long and Justin Long; and the other is Matthew Gentile’s thriller American Murderer, which will tell the true story of con artist Jason Derek Brown, who is presently on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List (Phillippe plays Special Agent Lance Leising). Neither movie currently has a release date, but those looking to watch the actor do his thing can catch new episodes of Big Sky on ABC.

Jordan Peele Has A Top Secret Movie Coming, And It Just Landed Its First Star

datetime=”2021-02-16T19:30:43-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 7:30 PM

Secrecy is everything when it comes to some folks in the movie industry. Keeping everything under wraps as long as humanly possible is a strategy we’ve seen creators like J.J. Abrams, M. Night Shyamalan, and yes, even Jordan Peele, employ quite extensively. So naturally, Mr. Peele’s follow-up to the mysterious Us is as much of a phantom as you’d expect; but that hasn’t stopped this project from landing it’s first star in actor Keke Palmer.

Set to be released next July, Jordan Peele’s untitled film is obviously lacking its plot credentials or a title to call it by. But per the announcement from Deadline, the big selling point now is that Keke Palmer, most recently seen alongside Jennifer Lopez in her Hustlers ensemble, is now our first clue to the future. It’s way too early to tell what Palmer’s casting has in store for us all, but since this is a Jordan Peele movie, it’s bound to be a creepy, yet humor tinged, look at something that comes straight from our own nightmares.

It’s also worth noting that in this same story, another item is credited with stating that Judas and the Black Messiah star Daniel Kaluuya is in talks to also star in this untitled Jordan Peele project. Though, if this story was hatching a couple of years ago, we’d probably still be saying Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, which is another exciting prospect to think about with Peele’s current film.

Jordan Peele isn’t only busy as a writer/director, but also a producer. While we don’t know much about his mysterious untitled project for next summer, we do know that he’s also got a film with Issa Rae in the works that definitely sounds like a pure nightmare. Sinkhole has been on the books since its announcement last summer, and the idea of a gaping maw in the backyard that’s just ready to “fix” everything that drops into it sounds pretty damned scary. Though that film only boasts Peele as a co-producer with Ms. Rae, so this mystery project with Keke Palmer pure Jordan Peele madness, direct from the source.

As it stands at this current moment, here’s what we know: Jordan Peele has written a new movie that will probably scare us all, and Keke Palmer is going to help him do just that as the lead. It maybe just the beginning of this new voyage into fright, but so far, it’s looking pretty cool with what we’ve seen happen here today. July 22, 2022 is the date set for this horrific occasion, so the road to any new revelations will probably be quiet for the months ahead. But that’s what Mr. Peele probably wants us to think, now isn’t it?

Marvel Celebrates Black Panther’s Third Anniversary With Some Beautiful Photos

datetime=”2021-02-16T19:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 7:00 PM

Three years ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe dropped a boulder in the lake of pop culture. After years of primarily making movies about white heroes, the world’s biggest big screen superhero franchise unleashed Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther on to the world, and in doing so created a cinematic landmark. The release date of the film is one that is going to be celebrated for many, many years to come, and today Marvel has reveled in the anniversary by posting some beautiful behind-the-scenes photos:

Three years ago today. #WakandaForever

????: @VisionElie pic.twitter.com/zqBPniiYXu

— Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) February 16, 2021

The hashtag #WakandaForever was trending earlier in the day with fans celebrating the third birthday of Black Panther, which came out on February 16, 2018, and Marvel Studios added to the conversation by positing a batch of photos taken from the making of the movie by photographer Elie. While it’s hard to specifically tell, it does appear that all of these shots were taken in the same area, if not during the shooting of the same sequence – namely the battle for Wakanda (not to be confused with the Battle Of Wakanda, which plays out in Avengers: Infinity War).

The shots capture the principal stars of the blockbuster, including Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, and Daniel Kaluuya in their full costumes, and Ryan Coogler can be spotted in the photo with Kaluyya.

And it wasn’t only the Marvel Studios official account that reflected on fond memories in time for Black Panther’s third anniversary. Lupita Nyong’o also posted a set of photos herself, though hers seem to be taken from the promotional tour for the film and the Hollywood premiere. You can check out the shots below:

Unforgettable. Three years since #BlackPanther. #WakandaForever. pic.twitter.com/VBXfEBbv9r

— Lupita Nyong'o (@Lupita_Nyongo) February 16, 2021

This, of course, has been an extremely hard year for Black Panther fans, as the world was devastated this past summer to learn that star Chadwick Boseman had passed away following many years battling cancer. With that in mind, reflecting on the remarkable success of the 2018 film is a bit different than it has been in the last couple of years, but what isn’t different is that we are still in awe of his remarkable performance, and he will forever live on as a pop culture icon.

Black Panther 2, which doesn’t presently have an official title, but will again feature Ryan Coogler at the helm, is now in pre-production, and filming will likely begin in the coming months. While the plot of the movie is unknown, many of the original’s stars are returning to reprise their respective roles, and Tenoch Huerta has come aboard to play the movie’s villain (it’s been speculated he will be playing Hector Ayala a.k.a. White Tiger, but that has not been confirmed). The sequel will be coming out a few months after Black Panther’s fourth anniversary, presently set to hit theaters everywhere on July 8, 2022.

Barb And Star Test Audiences Apparently Had No Idea Who Was Playing The Villain Role

datetime=”2021-02-16T18:30:05-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 6:30 PM

This story is going to get into deep spoilers for the new comedy Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, so stop reading now if you haven’t yet seen the movie.

By now, you know that Barb and Star isn’t exactly the movie that it advertised itself to be. The trailers suggested a buddy comedy for middle-aged Midwestern ladies starring Kristen Wiig and her Bridesmaids co-writer, Annie Mumolo. And it IS that… but that kernel is wrapped inside of an unconventional spy movie starring a ghost-white Bond villain named Susan Gorton Fisherman who has a devious revenge scheme worked up against the coastal Florida town of Vista Del Mar, where Barb (Mumolo) and Star (Wiig) happen to be vacationing.

And in the role of Susan Gorton Fisherman? Well, that’s Kristen Wiig, pulling double duty as the film’s evil villain, as well as one of the heroes who are going to foil Fisherman’s sinister plan. It’s similar to the days when Mike Myers would trade off scenes as both Austin Powers and his arch nemesis, Dr. Evil. Only, early audiences for Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar didn’t recognize Kristen Wiig in her second role, or so the film’s director tells us.

Josh Greenbaum stopped by the ReelBlend podcast this week to spill the tea on his wild new comedy, and when we opened the conversation up to Susan Gorton Fisherman, he told us:

One of the greatest compliments I think to [Kristen Wiig] is that when we did early test screenings, it was so many people that were like, ‘Who is that villain? She’s so good. I can’t put my finger on who the actress is.’ And that’s, I think, such a compliment to her role. My other fun, short story about that is we had a guy even working on the film, doing some color work early on in the process. He worked on the film for three days. Every day, I’d check in on him and he’d say, ‘Don’t tell me. I haven’t figured it out yet. I’ve got to go to IMDB. But I want to figure out who it is.’ He worked on it for three days and didn’t figure it out that it was Kristen. We do a couple of tricks. We add a little tooth gap… and a little prosthetic on the nose, and obviously, she’s actually wearing some interesting contact lenses. But the rest of it is just her performance and how she completely goes from one character to the other.

Susan Gorton Fisherman looks like she’d be right at home in a Tim Burton movie. Her skin is pale white, and her hair is jet black. She despises the citizens of this quaint town for the way they humiliated Susan at a young age. And this dual role is one that’s wildly unexpected, because all hints of the crime story are kept out of the film’s trailers.

For his part, Josh Greenbaum thinks it’s unprecedented what Kristen Wiig is doing on screen, stating:

Here’s what’s interesting for me. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen [this] from a female [actor]. … I remember Peter Sellers did it in Dr. Strangelove. And of course the wonderful Mike Myers did it. But I can’t really point to a female comedian doing it where she’s the hero and the villain in the same film. And no one can do it as great as the amazing Kristen Wiig.

It really is a sight to see. And you can see it now that Barb and Star is available to stream everywhere that movies can be rented. Once you do, listen to our full interview with Josh Greenbaum.

Bella Thorne’s Back On The Lingerie Train For New NSFW Shoot, This Time With Jordyn Woods And More

datetime=”2021-02-16T17:30:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 5:30 PM

Bella Thorne may be an actress and an OnlyFans personality, but more recently her biggest foray has been into the world of music-making, which typically involves some sort of music video she can then release early to her subscribers. She shared a sneak peek at her latest project for the song “Shake It” which absolutely involves jiggling butts. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya.

The theme of the music video involves Bella Thorne getting “married” to Abella Danger, a noted porn star in the industry. The clip she uploaded to Instagram features the two of them getting intimate with one another while wearing white lingerie. Technically, the clip is “safe” enough to play on Instagram, but it was content created for her ContentxStudios, so NSFW enough I’d avoid in professional settings.

A post shared by BELLA (@bellathorne)

Apparently, Abella Danger isn’t the only big name Bella Thorne filmed with for a February shoot, as a separate post also lists work with Jordyn Woods and Malu Trevejo. Jordyn Woods, of course, is the famous reality personality who became a household name thanks to palling around with the Kardashians but who had a falling out with Kylie Jenner and the clan after cheating allegations and some additional Keeping up with the Kardashians Tristan Thompson drama. Trevejo is also a singer and Instagram personality similar to Thorne, though without the acting pedigree.

In the past, Bella Thorne has been the main attraction in these music videos, but teaming up with some other leading ladies for a shoot should theoretically bring some additional eyeballs to the table. In particular, Jordyn Woods’ profile has risen in recent months as she has landed endorsement deals and started hanging out with some bigger names like Lori Harvey and Normani.

A post shared by BELLA (@bellathorne)

It’s worth pointing out that Bella Thorne’s main claim to fame is still starring in Shake It Up, a Disney Channel original series she starred in with Zendaya many moons ago. In this context, “Shake It” definitely takes on a bit of a different meaning. It’s unclear if the video title, a video which will officially drop on Feb. 19, was an intentional reference or happenstance.

Over the last few months, Bella Thorne has released a slew of music videos, including a video shot partially in a bathtub and partially in other lingeries for the song “Lonely.” A second video featured the singer working through some stuff related to an “SFB” she ultimately dated, a relationship that clearly didn’t work out.

These days, she’s dating Benjamin Mascolo and experimenting with her hair color, but she does have a slew of movie projects in development, including Habit (opposite Paris Jackson), Masquerade, Time is Up, and Measure of Revenge, among others. I wouldn’t be shocked if another music video comes down the pipeline somewhat soon either.

Stephen King Shares His Honest Thoughts After Catching M. Night Shyamalan’s Old Movie Trailer

datetime=”2021-02-16T17:00:47-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 5:00 PM

The amazing experience of watching a scary movie in a crowded theater is one that has not been on the table for nearly a year now. There’s nothing like being a part of a collective scream when a killer strikes, but the on-going pandemic has temporarily taken that away from us. There is hope, however, that things will return to some semblance of normal soon – and horror legend Stephen King, for one, is keeping his fingers crossed that will happen before the release of M. Night Shyamalan’s Old this summer.

The first trailer for the upcoming thriller premiered during the Super Bowl the weekend before last, and in his reaction to it the author of The Stand, The Shining, Carrie and many more classics went a step further than just mentioning his anticipation for its release. King further noted that he is staying optimistic that he will have the opportunity to watch Old on the big screen. Taking to his personal Twitter account, he wrote,

I caught a glimpse of this during the Superbowl. Looks really good. I hope I can go to a theater and see it.https://t.co/uuz0wEqFWU

— Stephen King (@StephenKing) February 12, 2021

Based on the graphic novel “Sandcastle” by Pierre-Oscar Lévy and Frederick Peeters, Old tells the story of a small group of people that sees an ordinary day at the beach turn absolutely horrifying. While things appear to be normal at first, they slowly discover that there is something about the area that is causing them to age rapidly, and if they don’t act fast it could mean their deaths. The film features an excellent cast including Gael Garcia Bernal, Thomasin McKenzie, Rufus Sewell, Embeth Davidtz, and Alex Wolff.

You can check out the Stephen King-hyped Super Bowl trailer for Old below:

Stephen King has not only never been shy about sharing his thoughts on new films and television shows, but in the last few months he has also been a proud advocate for the big screen experience. The theater industry has been greatly struggling since last March, but the author has tried to contribute via attendance – though he most definitely wasn’t happy with what he witnessed when he went to go see a movie last October. He didn’t mince words in his reaction, writing, “I feel terrible for the film industry.”

We definitely agree with Stephen King in regards to the building hunger to see a movie on the big screen again with a bunch of people, and while nothing is certain at present, there is no harm in keeping fingers crossed that M. Night Shyamalan’s Old could be enjoyed as originally intended. Universal Pictures currently has the film scheduled to be released on July 23, and while it’s possible that the studio could push that date if theaters aren’t ready to reopen, it’s also possible that they will apply the same strategy that they used for The Croods: A New Age and News Of The World: put the feature on the big screen where possible, and then take advantage of the contractually agreed upon PVOD window that would have it available online less than three weeks later.

For now Old is still a long ways away, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

Hamilton’s Christopher Jackson Reveals His Physical Response To Seeing The Disney+ Movie

datetime=”2021-02-16T16:00:35-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 4:00 PM

Hamilton’s release on Disney+ was met with huge fanfare and critical acclaim. The live-stage film became one of the most streamed films of 2020, and is a force in Awards Season. Not only were fans of the musical anticipating the live stage release, so were the production’s stars including Christopher Jackson. The Hamilton star recently revealed his physical response to seeing the film.

Christopher Jackson was one of the breakout stars from the megahit Broadway musical Hamilton. He was able to turn his role as George Washington into a thriving film and television career. As the Broadway production-turned-film has gained awards buzz, the actor did an interview with Gold Derby about the Disney+ film and his stage career. Jackson talked about his physical reaction to the film being released, saying:

Surreal. The first time I’ve ever seen any of my work on stage in a different medium, which was exciting and nerve-racking and even years removed, I’m still pretty twitchy. The body remembers all of these different emotions and the first time we watched it, Disney had sent us the screener to sort of prep for all the press and I’m sitting there on the couch and it was kind of the same experience the first time I actually sat in the theater and watched it with my wife. She just kind of gently would grab my arm when my face started contorting a little bit and I started to sweat a little bit. It’s a very surreal kind of experience. But it was great to finally be able to see, from the audience’s perspective, the wonderful work that was going on stage and what an amazing company and what an amazing show.

Christopher Jackson’s words spoke to how, even years removed from the stage production, seeing Hamilton on the screen still give him the same jitters as the show’s first opening night. Being a part of something so monumental for many years can trigger so many unusual responses, especially considering he played Washington for eight shows a week

Christopher Jackson was an integral part of the show’s success as the show continued its Broadway run (before the COVID-19 shutdown) and won Tony, Grammy, and Pulitzer Prizes. Jackson has a great friendship and working relationship with Lin-Manuel Miranda, whom he also worked with on the Broadway hit In The Heights.

Christopher Jackson and the original Broadway cast made Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton lyrics come to live night after night on the great white way. Their contribution led to a spike in Disney+ subscriptions and the soundtrack charting again.

Last year, Jackson spoke with CinemaBlend about a special moment from the musical that surprised him in the film. He even hoped for the film’s success could lead to an effect similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by championing for more musical films to be released. With all the award-season buzz, the live-stage film has been a conundrum as some are treating as a theatrical release and others as a television movie.

If you want to see Christopher Jackson’s George Washington, you can stream Hamilton on Disney+.

West Side Story: 8 Quick Things We Know About The Steven Spielberg Musical

datetime=”2021-02-16T16:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 16. 2021 4:00 PM

Whenever I first hear that a film I love is getting remade, I’m always a little apprehensive. Such was the case when news first came out about West Side Story, even with the knowledge that Steven Spielberg was going to be the one behind the camera. However, the more that we have learned about this new adaptation, whether it’s many of Spielberg’s frequent collaborators taking part, an exciting cast (Ansel Elgort and others) or just the chance to see the legendary musical on the big screen for the first time, there are certainly reasons to be optimistic about this new West Side Story.

West Side Story follows the star-crossed romance of Tony and Maria, as they try to bridge the rivalry between two teenage street gangs, the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Stephen Sondheim wrote the lyrics and Leonard Bernstein the music for the original Broadway show and the 1961 film adaptation, which was directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

Let’s take a closer look at what we know about the film.

West Side Story Is Steven Spielberg’s First Musical Directing Gig

We’ve seen Steven Spielberg direct almost everything from high-adventure films (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws) to sci-fi (E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind) to dramas (Bridge of Spies, Schindler’s List), but we’ve never seen him direct a musical.

The closest that Spielberg has ever been associated with a musical project is as an executive producer of the NBC show Smash which ran for two seasons.

Spielberg’s connection to West Side Story goes back to his childhood, when he fell in love with the 1957 Broadway production album recording, the filmmaker told Vanity Fair. “West Side Story has been that one haunting temptation that I have finally given in to.”

It’ll be interesting to see how that connection plays out on screen as the 74-year-old director is still trying new things (amid the more familiar, too).

Tony Kushner Returns To Broadway Roots In Adapting West Side Story

When Tony Kushner crosses over into film it is to work with Steven Spielberg. However, after Oscar-nominated collaborations for Munich and Lincoln, this third collaboration with Spielberg for West Side Story fits right in Kushner’s wheelhouse – Broadway.

Kushner is best known for writing the Tony-winning Angels in America, but he also has some musical experience, writing the book and lyrics for Caroline, or Change.

Kushner isn’t the only frequent Spielberg collaborator working on West Side Story. The look of the film is being crafted by frequent Spielberg cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.

Ansel Elgort And Rachel Zegler Star As West Side Story’s Star-Crossed Lovers

This West Side Story’s Tony and Maria come in the form of a well-known young actor and a complete newcomer in Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler.

Most of you are likely familiar with Elgort from either the Divergent franchise, The Fault in Our Stars or Baby Driver. And, in case you have any reservations of whether or not he can carry a Sondheim tune, he showcased some of his singing chops in a Riff-Off with Jamie Foxx on The Late Late Show With James Corden.

As for Zegler, she has no other credits listed on her IMDb page, but she won the part after Spielberg had an open casting call that saw more than 30,000 Latinx actors submit videos. After she was announced as Maria, EW compiled some of her singing highlights, including a version of “Shallow” from A Star is Born that went viral.

Now we just have to wait to see if sparks fly when they’re together on camera.

Rita Moreno, Oscar-Winner For Original Film, Returns For Remake

One of the 10 Oscars that the 1961 West Side Story film won was Best Supporting Actress for Rita Moreno as Anita. Maybe lightning will strike twice, because Moreno is set to appear in this version of West Side Story, too.

Moreno will play a brand new character called Valentina, who is said to be a reworking of the character Doc, who was Tony’s boss in the original stage and film versions.

Talking to Variety recently about the documentary Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, Moreno assured us all that “It’s not a cameo – it’s a real part.”

Unless something is being kept entirely under wraps, Moreno will be the only returning cast member from the 1961 film.

The West Side Story Supporting Cast Includes Corey Stoll, Brian D’Arcy James, Ariana DeBose And More

The rest of the cast isn’t anything to sniff at either. Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, The Prom) will take over the role of Anita from Rita Moreno. The rival gang leaders Riff and Bernardo, meanwhile, will be played by newer names Mike Faist and David Alvarez.

Some other faces that people are sure to recognize include Corey Stoll and Brian d’Arcy James, who will play local policemen Lieutenant Schrank and Officer Krupke.

Much of the rest of the cast will play members of either the Jets or the Sharks, and Spielberg was conscious of making sure that Latino actors and actresses made up the Sharks.

The West Side Story Release Date Was Pushed A Year Because Of The Pandemic

In a perfect world, one where the pandemic is either long gone or, better yet, never existed, we’d have already seen Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, as, originally, the film had a release date of Dec. 18, 2020.

However, as with nearly all major films in 2020, the date got shuffled. In this instance, by nearly a full year, as West Side Story is now slated to be released on Dec. 10, 2021. It’s still a long way out, so hopefully things progress as they should and we won’t have to worry about any future delays.

There was one small silver lining to the delay though …

The Remake Comes Exactly 60 Years After The Original Filmed Version

Because the new West Side Story had to be pushed from its original 2020 date, its 2021 release comes 60 years after the original. Maybe it’s fate, maybe it’s simply a 2020-induced coincidence, but it’s kind of nice symmetry. I also imagine that the team behind West Side Story will do a lot of leg work to honor both the original and build the hype for this new version.

West Side Story Is Expected To Debut In Theaters, Not On Disney+

One more thing about the release date shift. While not explicitly said, the full-year delay is likely because of the desire to have West Side Story debut on the big screen to packed theaters rather than on streaming.

West Side Story is a 20th Century Studios project, which ultimately means that it falls under Disney. Theoretically, if it wanted, Disney could have simply put West Side Story on Disney+ and done a surcharge like it did for Mulan and the upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon.

But, the December release, and the fact that Disney has been more selective as to what titles go onto streaming right away, points to a theatrical release.

That will certainly make Steven Spielberg happy, as he’s been one of the biggest champions for revitalizing the theater business.

Any Steven Spielberg film is going to be a marquee event, but having it be an adaptation of an Oscar-winner and all-time classic just ramps up the excitement even more. Here’s hoping a trailer comes down the pike in the not-too-distant future to help ease the wait.

Christopher Plummer’s Best Roles, Ranked

datetime=”2021-02-15T16:00:00-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 4:00 PM

On February 5, 2021, the world lost one of its greatest actors with the death of legend of the screen and stage Christopher Plummer. The 91-year-old actor, who appeared in 119 movies, 71 television series, and 17 theatre productions throughout his decades-long career, bringing some of the most unforgettable characters to life in a way few, if any, could pull off with as much grace, style, and confidence. From career-defining roles in classics like The Sound of Music to modern classics like Beginners and Knives Out, there are dozens of Christopher Plummer movies that have withstood the test of time.

With performances going all the way back to the early 1950s to ones that have yet to reach audiences in 2021, Christopher Plummer’s legacy is one that should be remembered fondly for he gave us his all until his final breath. And while I would love to break down each of Plummer’s roles, small and large, for the sake of brevity, I’ve put together this list of his ten best performances, ranked from great to greatest.

10. Inside Man (Arthur Case)

Christopher Plummer is often remembered for his more friendly characters like Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 musical The Sound of Music and his Oscar-winning performance in 2010’s Beginners, but the decorated actor could pull off an evil villain with something to hide better than most. Such is the case for the 2006 Spike Lee joint Inside Man in which Plummer portrays Arthur Case, the chairman of the board of directors of the bank at the center of a major heist and hostage situation.

Throughout much of the movie, the audience doesn’t fully understand just why Arthur Case is attempting to prevent certain items of his from being found, but it’s easy to tell by his fidgety demeanor and persistence in taking care of the matter in the quietest of manners. Once the truth comes out and we learn that Case has a past full of war crimes and crimes against humanity, we become fully aware as to why the bank chairman did all he could to prevent his dark past from resurfacing.

9. All The Money In The World (J. Paul Getty)

Ridley Scott’s 2017 crime thriller All the Money in the World may not be anyone’s favorite movie from the acclaimed director or anyone in the cast, but the fact that Christopher Plummer was hired to replace Kevin Spacey just two months before the film’s release earns it a spot on this list. Shortly after sexual abuse allegations against Spacey surfaced in October 2017, Plummer was brought in to portray J. Paul Getty, the multi-billionaire oil tycoon who refused to give in to kidnappers’ demands when his grandson was held hostage in 1973.

The fact Christopher Plummer was able to come in at short notice, learn all his lines, become the commanding figure, and complete a series of reshoots in a little over a week is something that will be talked about for years to come. And everyone else seems to think so as well considering Plummer received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations following its December 2017 release.

8. The Thorn Birds (Archbishop Vittorio di Contini-Verchese)

In addition to appearing in scores of movies throughout his career, Christopher Plummer also had a successful television career, and one the titles that comes up the most is the 1983 miniseries The Thorn Birds. While Plummer doesn’t play the main character in this four-part, ten-hour sprawling epic about a priest having a forbidden love affair that can’t carry on, the late actor’s portrayal of Archbishop Vittorio di Contini-Verchese remains one of the bright spots of the ABC production.

Christopher Plummer’s ability to portray the good nature of Catholic dignitary while also showing off his chops when his character begins planning things of his own is something to behold. And while The Thorn Birds typically doesn’t come up in the discussion of Plummer’s best roles, it’s one that shouldn’t be forgotten.

7. A Beautiful Mind (Dr. Rosen)

Ron Howard’s 2001 Academy Award-winning biographical drama A Beautiful Mind is mostly remembered for the phenomenal portrayal of John Nash by Russell Crowe, but the supporting cast, which includes Christopher Plummer as psychiatrist Dr. Rosen, is nothing to overlook. Throughout the movie, we watch as Dr. Rosen attempts to treat Nash’s deteriorating mental state due to his schizophrenia, even if the brilliant mathematician sees Plummer’s character as his own personal villain.

The way in which Plummer navigates the role and the events of the movie adds a level of authority to A Beautiful Mind that takes it from a great movie to one of the best of the 21st Century. Also, the way in which Plummer’s character provides much-needed exposition without coming off as much is further proof of his brilliant acting.

6. The Man Who Would Be King (Rudyard Kipling)

John Huston’s 1975 epic The Man Who Would Be King mostly follows the exploits of two British soldiers-turned-adventurers played by Sean Connery and Michael Caine, but Christopher Plummer’s Richard Kipling (the name given to the narrator of the real Kipling’s 1888 novella of the same name) does a remarkable job of serving as an almost tour guide for the audience watching the story unfold. Not as over-the-top or charismatic as the film’s two leads, Plummer’s Kipling remains the voice of reason at times and has a cool-headedness about him that is truly something to behold.

5. Up (Charles F. Muntz)

By the time Christopher Plummer voiced the famed explorer-turned-villain Charles F. Muntz in Pixar’s Up, he was already well-established in the voice acting field, having earned a Primetime Emmy for his work on the animated series Madeline, as well as other critically acclaimed projects like An American Tail. Still, though, Plummer’s voice work in 2009 emotionally-charged adventure story remains at the top of the list of his animated works, and entire filmography for that matter.

Convincing in his performance, first as the eager explorer oozing charm, and then as the dastardly and mentally unstable elderly man who’ll stop at nothing to get home, Christopher Plummer helps make Up a movie that is remembered for more than just its heartbreaking opening chapter.

4. Knives Out (Harlan Thrombey)

With a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and countless others, you would think that it would be hard to stand out in the crowd in Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit comedy, but not for Christopher Plummer. The late actor’s performance as Harlan Thrombey, the mystery novelist whose suicide kickstarts the film’s plot is beyond amazing and remains one of the best in the whole production, which is saying something.

The way Christopher Plummer is able to play off his costars (especially in a certain scene with Ana de Armas’ character Marta) is brilliant and should be studied by aspiring thespians around the world. And despite the brief time on screen, Plummer makes the most of it and gets more out of a few minutes than most could get out an entire movie. Time to watch it again.

3. The Insider (Mike Wallace)

The Insider, Michael Mann’s 1999 drama centering on a fictionalized account of a true story of a tobacco industry whistleblower on the CBS program 60 Minutes is one of those movies that’s so good and features a cast that’s so strong, it’s hard to believe it’s not a bigger deal. With everyone from Al Pacino to Russell Crowe to Philip Baker Hall firing at all cylinders, this movie is an intense and oftentimes frustrating account into the evildoings of large corporations.

And in the middle of it all is Christopher Plummer in his portrayal of the late journalist Mike Wallace as he covers the 60 Minutes story. And while not always viewed as the hero, or willing to stand for what is right in some cases, Plummer’s version of the famous reporter is a well-rounded character that comes off as living, breathing human isn’t afraid to admit they are wrong.

2. Beginners (Hal Fields)

After watching Christopher Plummer’s portrayal of Hal Fields in Mike Mills’ 2011 romantic dramedy Beginners, it should come as no surprise as to why the late actor received his first and only Oscar for his heartbreaking yet inspiring performance of a man coming to terms with both his identity and mortality in the final years of his life. Coming out of the closet following the death of his wife, the widower finds new meaning in life and finally accepts who is as a person and explains as much to his son Oliver played by Ewan McGregor.

There is a certain charm to Beginners that prevent me from growing tired of this lovingly poignant story despite watching it dozens of times since its release. The chemistry between the cast, the pacing of the story that allows things to play out, and tone of the film make it all that much better.

1. The Sound Of Music (Captain Georg von Trapp)

This should come as no surprise, but Christopher Plummer’s performance as Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 musical sensation The Sound of Music is hands down the actor’s best role, even if he wasn’t too fond of the movie following its release. The way in which Plummer’s von Trapp transforms from a strict military officer and patriarch of a family consisting of musically talented yet disobedient children into a loving, caring man upon meeting and falling for Julie Andrew’s Maria is so brilliant it makes you forget the movie ends with the family on the run from Nazis.

There are plenty of reasons The Sound of Music remains as popular today as it was upon its release some 55 years ago, and Christopher Plummer’s iconic performance is near the top of that list.

These are the ten best Christopher Plummer roles but this doesn’t mean these are the only good roles from his miraculous career. Over the years, Plummer killed it in movies like David Fincher’s 2011 remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 12 Monkeys, and even The Return of the Pink Panther. With stage productions at multiple legendary theatres on Broadway and countless television appearances, it’s safe to say Plummer’s career was one for the ages.

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible Sequels Have Hit Another Shakeup

datetime=”2021-02-15T14:27:55-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 2:27 PM

The plans for Tom Cruise’s signature action franchise included an ambitious shoot that would see both Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 filming back to back. Not even the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to be able to thwart Tom Cruise’s big play to bring Ethan Hunt back to the big screen in one long period of production, harkening back to beloved franchises like Back to the Future and The Matrix. Now that will no longer be the case, as once Mission: Impossible 7 concludes filming, he won’t able to start the net film. Instead, he’ll be promoting the theatrical release of Top Gun: Maverick.

Apparently the shifting landscape of theatrical releases over at Paramount is what’s to thank for the break in the action between Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8. Per reporting from Deadline, the July 2nd release date of Top Gun: Maverick requires Tom Cruise to stop saving the world long enough to make sure it feels the need for speed. In the best case scenario, the press tour for long-awaited fighter pilot sequel would go off without a hitch, and as soon as that’s completed Cruise would be back at work with his IMF cohorts.

The back to back approach was the best course of action for both of these Mission: Impossible sequels, as writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has been teasing a story so large, it had to span two different films. With cast members like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Hayley Atwell all along for the ride, the building blocks were already there for a smooth shoot that would see the next two installments potentially bundled up before the November 4, 2022 release date of Mission: Impossible 8.

2022 is seemingly a banner year for Tom Cruise, not only because of Mission: Impossible 8’s release, but also because he turns 60 that year. With a previous report on his Mission: Impossible stunt work supposedly saying that he’s looking to stop doing the hard stuff on camera at that very age, this new wrinkle in the production schedule might make that a little harder. Though at this time the November 2022 release date still stands for Mission: Impossible 8; so we might just see Mr. Cruise make it down to the wire, or give himself a little more time for one last thrill.

Of course, there was once a time when there was talk that Tom Cruise was leaving the Mission: Impossible franchise for good in the past; and that was around when Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol sounded like it was going to see Jeremy Renner become the franchise lead. So maybe we’ll just wait until those press round for Top Gun: Maverick start up later this year before we pass judgement, as you know one of the many questions will be whether or not Ethan Hunt’s last ride into the sunset (presumably off a mountain based ramp) will be with Mission: Impossible 8 or not.

One Of Bridesmaids Biggest Scenes Almost Featured A Dead Woman Gag, According to Kristen Wiig

datetime=”2021-02-15T13:22:40-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 1:22 PM

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo struck pay dirt when they wrote the script for Bridesmaids. Not only was the female-centered, R-rated comedy filled with the kind of consistent laughs and sight gags that help make the film just as enjoyable during repeat viewings, but it was (as you may remember) also one of the biggest hits of 2011. Now, though, we know that the film could have been a bit darker, as Wiig has revealed that she and Mumolo had a gag planned which would have involved a dead woman.

While the idea of Bridesmaids touching on something that, in theory, could have been so serious might sound like an idea that’s completely left of center, let’s not forget just how funny Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig made explosive diarrhea and a whole host of other things which can cause a lot of stress in real life. The writing partners spoke with the New York Times about their recently released comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, and when asked whether or not Bridesmaids had included more absurdist humor like their new film, Wiig said:

When we were running around to find Lillian [the bride, played by Maya Rudolph], we were going to find a woman lying on the ground. We’re like, ‘It’s Lillian — she’s dead!’ And then we were like, ‘Oh wait — it’s not Lillian.’ And then we just keep running.

If you’ve seen Bridesmaids, and I certainly hope you have by this point, you can probably imagine how this would have been worked into the film and, likely, fit right in. Kristen Wiig also noted that she and Annie Mumolo had, originally, planned for there to be a couple of musical numbers in the movie, so they clearly had a lot of plans for even more wackiness to ensue than it did.

Of course, toward the end of Bridesmaids, we’ve been watching Wiig’s character, Annie, endure events as her life quickly falls apart while her best friend, Lillian, is preparing for her wedding and the happiest time of her life. But, yet another potential wrench has been thrown into the mix, as Annie’s movie-long nemesis, Helen (Rose Byrne), asks for help finding Lillian on the day of her wedding.

As Wiig tells it, when the two are searching for the (supposed) runaway bride, they happen upon a dead woman lying on the ground and think it was their friend, only to realize it wasn’t and happily ignore that they just found a dead body so they could keep looking for Lillian.

Wiig and Mumolo didn’t say why the gag was cut from the script, but I can totally see this being a perfectly shocking funny moment among the many others in Bridesmaids. If you’ll recall, the search for Lillian led to Annie and Helen mending fences and being able to clear a way for Lillian’s friends to become friendly in their own right. I’m sure eventually dealing with the fact that they found a dead woman would have been able to help that bonding along, and trust that Wiig and Mumolo could have made such a moment oddly funny.

You can relive the (dead body-free) joys of Bridesmaids on Amazon and a variety of other streaming services, and also check out Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo in their new film, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, which is available to stream right now.

New Mountain Dew Ad Brings Back The Gremlins And Now I Need That Third Movie ASAP

datetime=”2021-02-15T12:47:57-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 12:47 PM

For years, there’s been talk of making a new sequel in the Gremlins franchise, which would pick up at some point after 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch. But that’s all it’s been at this point, as development of the script and concept is the furthest that we’ve seen the idea of a Gremlins threequel progress. Warner Bros., you’ve officially run out of excuses to prolong the inevitable, as that new Mountain Dew ad that saw Zach Galligan’s Billy Peltzer and Gizmo reunite is further proof and motivation that I need that third movie ASAP.

Before we get too deep, let’s cocoon for a moment and talk about what this new Mountain Dew ad is all about. Promoting the surprisingly tasty Mountain Dew Zero Sugar which “tastes as good as the original, but without the sugar,” we see Galligan reprise the role of Billy, bro-ing out on the couch with Gizmo as usual. The legendary Mogwai, who now has grey fur of his own, is keen on trying this new soda; so Billy, in his infinite wisdom and caution, lets his friend try it. It goes as well as you’d think, and you can see the results for yourself in the commercial below:

Advertisements cashing in on nostalgia aren’t anything new, and this is a simple ad for Mountain Dew Zero Sugar. But seeing Billy and Gizmo together again warms my ‘80s kid heart, even if our human friend has yet again been irresponsible with this mysterious creature. (Seriously Bill, would it have killed you to put it into a sippy cup? Or maybe you could given Gizmo a straw? Let’s think here.) Even crazier is the fact that now we see that Billy has a daughter, presumably with Phoebe Cates’ Kate from the Gremlins saga. And she has her own double mohawked Mogwai.

In just a short span of a commercial, Mountain Dew’s ad wizards have teased out a potential Gremlins 3 that’s exciting enough that I’d want to see it followed through. Of course, should any sort of movement be made on that third Gremlins movie, it’d have to pass the muster of franchise creator/writer Chris Columbus, and it’d be even better if director Joe Dante was attached. But putting those caveats aside for the moment, this ad works really well in the world of Gremlins.

It kind of is surprising that we’ve only seen two Gremlins movies when, for a time, the franchise felt like a Warner Bros staple in the mid-’80s/early-’90s. Gremlins 2: The New Batch may not have been a financial hit, but with a year that also gave the world The Hunt for Red October, Total Recall, and Dick Tracy all shortly before Gremlins 2 released, that fault may not have lied in the film. People still fondly remember it to this day, myself included, and the franchise never stopped being one that fans questioned the potential return of.

That could change very quickly in the near future, partially thanks to WarnerMedia and HBO Max launching the animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, presumably at some point this year. Though in an unofficial capacity, a new idea has kept the Gremlins franchise alive, as musician/viral comedian Nick Lutsko has been doing his own thing with the storied franchise. And it all culminated in the fan trailer to his idea for a sequel: Gremlins 3: Dawn of Desmond.

Gizmo, Billy Peltzer, and the Gremlins have never left the realm of pop culture, but they could have been used to a greater extent than they have been. It’s crazy to think that a Mountain Dew ad could be the catalyst to actually making Gremlins 3 happen, but now Zach Galligan has more material to back his desires to make it happen. This short and sweet-ish look at the potential future of the Gremlins series feels like a good starting point to lead the charge; or at the very least, spawn some future commercials to help sell soft drinks and nerd heaven at the same time.

Are you ready for a Gremlins 3?

  • Yes, and I have been since I first saw Gremlins 2.

  • I mean, it sounds like a cool idea, but it really depends on the script.

  • No. Please stop giving Billy Peltzer a Mogwai, he doesn’t know how to care for one!

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Pick For A Character She’d ‘Want To Be Friends With’ Is Thankfully Not The Velociraptors From Jurassic World

datetime=”2021-02-15T12:21:22-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 12:21 PM

While many celebs have cut back on work given the global circumstances, Bryce Dallas Howard has been a major name in Hollywood who has had a big year. She directed in The Mandalorian Season 2 along with a Super Bowl ad. She filmed Jurassic World: Dominion. She founded Nine Muses Entertainment, a newsletter that just asked her which of the fictional characters she’s spent time with on set she’d most like to be pals with in real life. Thankfully, her answer was not a pack of velociraptors.

Instead, she looked to the world of streaming for her answers. And if you are familiar at all with The Mandalorian, you probably already have a guess for which co-worker she picked. (Sorry, Pedro Pascal.)

Why Grogu (sweet Baby), of course!

The interview in question is part of Nine Muses newsletter, and also featured Bryce Dallas Howard talking about her new Super Bowl ad, which incorporated the song “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star” into an announcement about a civilian mission into space. Still, as much as we all love The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda character, did she see the baby dinos Colin Trevorrow has been teasing for Jurassic World: Dominion? I mean, did she?

Ready. pic.twitter.com/mkTbGYbaGV

— Colin Trevorrow (@colintrevorrow) February 17, 2020

That’s a cute little dinosaur if I’ve ever seen one. Not to be a total cynic here, as I love adorable movie and TV characters as much as the next person, but a lot of times movies will add cuties such as Baby Yoda and tiny dinos in order to sell toys related to movie franchises. Case in point: Baby Yoda’s been so popular that sales for Hasbro jumped 70% last year. Yes, 70%.

It’s a bet that paid off, as Disney didn’t start getting any Baby Yoda toys into the works until the surprise had aired on Disney+, meaning it was months after The Mandalorian Season 1 aired that Bryce Dallas Howard, or anyone really, could get their hands on some cute Baby Yoda merch. On the other hand, Trevorrow’s already spilled the beans on those dinos from Dominion, so there won’t be any spoilers to worry about there.

As far as Grogu goes, the little tyke can be pretty rascally, but probably still has more pros than the artificially engineered dinos in Jurassic World. He certainly has more powers. Choosing little Grogu means Bryce Dallas Howard is not picking some of her other famous character co-workers though. Sorry-not-sorry to Edward Cullen, Elliott from Pete’s Dragon and Taron Egerton’s rendition of Elton John.

Jurassic World: Dominion has finally wrapped filming and gone into post-production, but it won’t actually be hitting theaters now until June 10, 2022. A lot could happen in the world of adorable movie and TV characters in the meantime, but for now I have to ask…

Which is cuter? Baby Yoda or Baby Dinos?

  • Grogu of course!

  • J world dinos, is this even a question?

  • Honestly, I’d take Elliott.

Kendall Jenner Sends Self-Love Message After Rocking Kim’s Red SKIMS Underwear For Valentine’s Day

datetime=”2021-02-15T12:13:34-08:00″>
Published:
Feb. 15. 2021 12:13 PM

Kendall Jenner is a model. She’s wealthy. She’s part of the famous Kardashian family and she seemingly wants for very little. Plus over the Valentine’s Day holiday she did her half-sister Kim Kardashian a solid and rocked some red SKIMS like it was nobody’s business. Not everyone was happy with the choice, but Kendall Jenner took the opportunity to share a message on self-love with her fans–and even some of her haters.

To really get a feel for what happened here, first you need to see the lingerie-clad Kendall Jenner rocking out in bright red undies to celebrate her famous sibling’s line of shapewear. In short, Jenner looks quite like a model in the short segment, probably because she is a model.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner)

Even if she weren’t a model at this point, all of the Kardashian sisters have pretty much figured out how to rock their best angles in the best lighting and a post like this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Kim Kardashian West, Kourtney Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian or Kylie Jenner either. Regardless, pretty much everything Kendall and the gang do is under some sort of scrutiny online.

After the Valentine’s Day posts dropped, one woman took to Twitter to share that she has “99 problems” and that “looking like Kendall Jenner would solve all of them.” Say it in the same cadence as the Jay-Z song and it’s a pretty catchy comment, but Kendall Jenner wants to make it clear that looking good won’t solve all of your problems in life and that the real answer is finding self-love. She responded to the Tweet, noting (edited for grammar),

I am an extremely lucky girl. Appreciative of all that I have, but I want you to know I have bad days too and that I hear you! You are beautiful just the way you are!!! It’s not always as perfect as it may seem.

Social media can often make the lives of celebrities and influencers look idyllic. That can hit the fans who follow them hard, particularly on holidays with a little bit of a lonely reputation, as Valentine’s Day can have. However, Kendall Jenner is a person just like everyone else with her own issues, and unlike most people, a lot of her issues are public knowledge. She’s been open in the past about being a hypochondriac, and her anxiety has shown up from time to time while filming Keeping up with the Kardashians.

That show has also detailed moments from her life most people wouldn’t want public, like that time she and sister Kylie Jenner got into a huge blow-up argument during the filming of the TV series. That series may be ending soon, but we’ve seen an awful lot of Jenner’s life play out on television since she was a kid.

Now, whether or not Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS products will actually help you achieve the look you want to achieve is a horse of a different color. Just ask this TikToker what she thinks about the famous shapewear line…

Henry Cavill: What To Watch Streaming If You Like The Superman Actor

Superman has been around for decades, and many actors in the past have taken on the challenge to accurately portray the famous superhero for fans to enjoy. Most recently, Henry Cavill has signed on to that role, and while some of the movies he has been in have been questionable (ah, Batman V. Superman), there’s no denying that Cavill fits the part.

However, Cavill is known for plenty of other roles besides playing the red-caped superhero, most that fans of the actor should watch if they want to get a taste for what Cavill can do. From big films like Justice League to hit TV shows like The Witcher, this is what you should watch if you like Henry Cavill.

The Witcher (Netflix)

Well, obviously I have to put The Witcher on here. Arguably, the fantasy series is one of Cavill’s biggest successes, as it should be. The Witcher tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, one of the last known Witchers (basically a monster hunter) in the world, and the adventures of his life, told over hundreds of years in a medieval-esq kingdom full of monsters, sorcery, and evil men and women.

Henry Cavill has taken on the main role as Geralt and has done a great job of it. I think what makes The Witcher great to watch more so is that Cavill is actually a big fan of the series, both the books and the games, so he was extremely dedicated to getting this part just right. And, obviously, it’s one of the most-viewed original series’ ever on Netflix, so the fans are there.

Stream it on Netflix here.

Enola Holmes (Netflix)

Switching over from a TV show to a movie, Enola Holmes is a surprisingly interesting and fun film that Cavill rocks in. Enola Holmes tells the story of the youngest of the Holmes siblings, Enola, and how she wants to live up to the legacy of her brother, the famous Sherlock Holmes, while trying to run away from the pressures that society puts on her.

Cavill portrays Sherlock, and at first, I was a bit skeptical, considering I never thought of Sherlock as this big, muscly man. But, the movie (and Cavill himself) do a great job of showing that amount of intrigue and brilliance that the character is known for. Plus, he’s just a side-character.

The Tudors (Showtime)

Arguably what made Henry Cavill famous, The Tudors is all about the reign and the marriages of King Henry VIII – otherwise known as the man who basically invented divorce in England. The series covers the drama that came with his reign, and the repercussions of his actions.

The actor portrayed Charles Brandon, the first Duke of Suffolk, and more importantly, the brother-in-law to Henry VIII. There’s a reason why Cavill received many roles after this show, and it’s because he did a great job at portraying the historical figure. Even though this part of English history is dramatized frequently on TV due to the craziness of it all, it’s fun to watch a series really lean in to the insanity of what went down, even if the show does take some liberties with history now and then.

The Cold Light Of Day (Showtime)

Cavill really does have some range, because we are moving away from historical dramas and stepping into an action thriller with The Cold Light of Day. The story follows the tale of Will, who has to take matters into his own hands when his family is kidnapped by foreign agents, who were searching for a briefcase which Will’s father stole.

When I look at Cavill, I always instantly think of an action-movie man, because he has that sort of charisma where he’s very easy to cheer on. Not only that, the man really knows how to fight. In addition, the movie also stars some big names alongside him, like Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, so it’s worth a shot to watch just for the cast.

Mission Impossible – Fallout (Hulu)

Moving onto another action film, Cavill lent his skills over to the Mission Impossible franchise by joining the cast of Mission Impossible – Fallout. If you don’t know what this series is, you’ve truly been living under a rock, considering it’s been going for decades now. Tom Cruise leads this spy franchise, showing off his moves in numerous crazy stunts, to continue the story of Ethan Hunt.

However, even if Cruise is the main star, Cavill does a fantastic job playing August Walker. Not only do you get to see his action skills once more (improved at this point because he’s been Superman for some time now), you get to see him as the type of character he doesn’t normally portray. I won’t give away too many spoilers, but it’s certainly a change. Plus, you get to see him with a sick mustache. Totally worth the watch.

Night Hunter (Amazon Prime)

Moving on to a psychological thriller, Cavill continued to expand his work by joining the cast of Night Hunter. The tale follows a police department and a vigilante getting caught up in a scheme which involves a man who was recently arrested after being linked to years of female abductions.

While it’s not Cavill’s best film to date (in my opinion), I personally think it is super cool to see him take on this genre, and in a role that I had never seen him in before previous to my viewing of this film. Even so, there are plenty of other stars like Stanley Tucci, Alexandra Daddario, and Nathan Fillion to watch alongside Cavill, so there’s no denying the star power that comes with the film. Night Hunter might be worth a shot if you’re into thrillers.

Sand Castle (Netflix)

Now, moving onto a war drama (I wasn’t joking when I said Cavill has dipped his toes into everything), we take a look at the Netflix original movie, Sand Castle. The film, based on the true events of the film’s writer, takes place during the 2003 Iraq War and follows the story of a young rifleman named Matt Ocre.

While there are so many war movies out there, I think what makes this one stand out is that it talks about one of the more recent wars. Most war films I’ve seen focus on World War 1 or 2, or the Vietnam War but this one touches a much more recent conflict. Cavill, who portrays a captain leading a Special Forces unit, does a good job of showing the dangers of war and the horrors that can come from it. Sand Castle is definitely worth the watch if you’re into war movies.

Man Of Steel And His Other DCEU Movies (HBO Max)

Alright, I might have said earlier that some of Cavill’s films in the DCEU haven’t been the best (just because of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice), but that doesn’t mean that he’s not good in them. In fact, Cavill is actually really great as Superman/Clark Kent. You can also see him in Justice League, as well as Man of Steel, which kicked off the DCEU. In both of these, Cavill does a great job of showing off the awesomeness that is Superman.

Even so, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League set to come out on HBO Max soon, what better time than now to catch up on Cavill’s other DCEU work? I think it would quite an enjoyable afternoon. While many reports have come out saying Cavill could still reprise the role, these movies are definitely worth the time to see where he began with the iconic character.

It’s clear that Cavill has acting chops to spare in multiple genres. Only time will tell where he goes next, but, hopefully, it will be the completion of The Witcher Season 2.
